Claiming Prizes
Claiming Nebraska Lottery prizes is easy.
Nebraska Lottery tickets are bearer instruments, so the first thing to do (especially if you have a large winner) is sign and complete the back of the ticket to establish ownership.
Prizes for Lotto games can be claimed up to 180 days after the draw date. Lotto tickets cannot be cashed until 5 a.m. CT the day after the drawing. Scratch games can be claimed up to 180 days after the game closing date.
There is never a fee to claim Nebraska Lottery prizes. Prizes up to $500 can be claimed at any Nebraska Lottery retailer. Some retailers reserve the right to pay prizes only up to a certain level due to security concerns.
Tickets with total prize amounts of $501 to $19,999 must be claimed by mail or at a Regional Lottery Claim Center. Be prepared to show a Driver's License or another form of photo ID when claiming. Free ticket prizes may be paid by free quick pick ticket, coupon, or warrant for the cash amount per Lottery regulations.
Taxes
By law, the Nebraska Lottery automatically checks for back taxes and child support on prizes of more than $500.
A Form W-2G will be sent to claimants the following January for each wager with a prize of more than $600. The Nebraska Lottery will notify the IRS and the Nebraska Department of Revenue of these prizes.
Prizes above $5,000 have state and federal taxes automatically withheld, at 5 and 24 percent, respectively.
